Black Friday loyalty is the practice of using rewards, points and member perks during Black Friday and Cyber Monday to bring the buyers you acquire back for a second order, instead of competing on discount depth alone. Below are ten campaign structures that run during the sale but pay off in December and January.
Most BFCM advice is about acquisition: traffic, ads and the deepest code you can afford. This guide covers the part almost nobody plans, what happens to those customers after the weekend. If you are still building your overall plan for November, start with our BFCM preparation guide for 2026, which explains why loyalty needs a lead time of weeks, not days.

What is a Black Friday loyalty campaign?
A Black Friday loyalty campaign is any BFCM offer whose value is delivered through your loyalty program rather than as an instant markdown: bonus points, double points, tier credit, early access or a reward that unlocks later. The goal is the same as any sale, more orders, but the payoff is measured in repeat purchases over the following 60 to 90 days.
That distinction matters because the weekend is huge and the follow through is weak. Adobe Analytics reports that US shoppers spent $44.2 billion online over Cyber Five 2025, up 7.7% year on year, with Black Friday alone at $11.8 billion and Cyber Monday a record $14.25 billion (Adobe, December 2025). Yet retention data tells a different story.
Ometria found that only 4% of its clients' Black Friday 2024 new customers made a repeat purchase within 12 months, and that Black Friday buyers were six times less likely to return than typical new customers (Ometria, Black Friday 2025 data). The flip side shows up in our own Black Friday 2025 network data: 20% of November orders came from customers who had redeemed a reward earlier in the year.
Why do Black Friday buyers rarely come back?
Black Friday buyers rarely come back because most of them were acquired by price, and a price-led relationship ends the moment the price goes back up. The discount did its job on the first order and gave the customer no reason to think about you again until the next sale.
Three things make it worse. The codes are deep: Adobe saw Cyber Monday discounts peak at 31% off listed price in electronics, 28% in toys and 25% in apparel. The buyers are new: Bluecore found that 64% of Black Friday 2024 purchases across its brands were made by new buyers. And the follow up is generic, usually a wave of further promotional emails that keeps teaching the same lesson about waiting for a deal. Our breakdown of the hidden costs of one-time shoppers puts numbers on what that pattern does to margin.
- Margin is given away on the first order
- Nothing pulls the buyer back in December
- Customers learn to wait for the next sale
- You keep an email address and little else
- Value is held as points redeemable later
- A dated reason to place order two
- Status and progress customers do not want to lose
- A member profile you can target in January
The economics favour fixing it. Acquiring a new customer is anywhere from five to 25 times more expensive than retaining an existing one, and Bain research cited in the same piece shows a 5% lift in retention can raise profits by 25% to 95% (Harvard Business Review). You have already paid to acquire these buyers. A loyalty campaign is how you collect on that spend.
10 Black Friday loyalty campaign ideas that pay off in January
Each idea below runs during BFCM but is built to create a second order later. Use the table to pick two or three that fit your margin and your customer base, then read the detail.
| Campaign idea | Runs | Pays back | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Bonus points instead of a deeper code | BFCM weekend | December redemption order | Brands with thin margins |
| 2. Double points windows | Set hours on BFCM | Higher basket, later redemption | Members and repeat buyers |
| 3. Enrolment at checkout | Every BFCM order | A contactable member, not a guest | High guest checkout share |
| 4. Post-purchase tier fast track | BFCM to 31 Jan | Second order to keep the tier | Tiered programs |
| 5. Delayed activation rewards | Unlocks mid December | A dated return visit | Gift-heavy categories |
| 6. Second order challenge | December to January | Order two inside 60 days | Every store |
| 7. Member early access | Days before 27 Nov | Sign ups and member revenue | Brands with an existing list |
| 8. December streak | 1 to 24 Dec | Repeat visits through gifting | Apps and high frequency retail |
| 9. Gifting referrals | BFCM to Christmas | New members from gift recipients | Giftable products |
| 10. January reactivation sequence | Early January | Wins back non returners | Every store |
1. Bonus points instead of a deeper discount
Hold your public discount a step shallower than competitors and add bonus points on top, worth the difference or more in perceived value. The customer still gets a headline deal, but part of the value only arrives when they come back. This is the single biggest lever in Black Friday loyalty, because it converts margin you would have given away today into a reason for a December order.
2. Double points windows
Run double or triple points for fixed hours, such as the first six hours of Black Friday or members only on Cyber Monday. Short windows create urgency without another price cut and reward the customers already in your program. The mechanics behind gamified rewards explain why a clear time limit lifts participation more than an open-ended bonus.
3. Enrolment at checkout, with welcome points
Most BFCM buyers check out as guests, which means you cannot reach them in January. Offer one tap enrolment on the order confirmation page with welcome points credited immediately. Our list of ways to get customers to sign up for rewards covers the placements that convert best.

4. Post-purchase tier fast track
Let BFCM spend count double toward your next tier, then grant the tier provisionally with a deadline: place one more order by 31 January to keep it. Loss aversion does the rest. If you run tiered loyalty programs, this is the cleanest way to turn a one-time big basket into a repeat customer.
5. Delayed activation rewards
Issue a reward on the Black Friday order that only becomes usable from a set date, for example 15 December, and expires a few weeks later. The customer has a reason to remember you exactly when the post-sale silence usually begins. Keep the rule simple enough to print on the confirmation email in one line.
6. Second order challenge
Give every BFCM buyer one visible goal: place a second order within 60 days and unlock a fixed reward. Challenges work because they turn a vague invitation into a progress bar. It is also the metric that matters most, as our guide to repeat purchase rate explains.
A deeper code costs you margin on every Black Friday order, whether or not the buyer ever returns. Bonus points cost you only when a customer comes back to spend them, and a returning customer is the result you were paying for in the first place.
7. Member early access
Open the sale to loyalty members 24 to 48 hours before 27 November. Early access rewards the customers who already buy from you, and it gives everyone else a reason to join in the weeks before the sale, which is when acquisition is cheapest. Deloitte's 2025 holiday survey found that 26% of shoppers planned to use loyalty points, up from 20% in 2024, so members are actively looking for this kind of perk.
8. December streak
Run a 12 day streak through December where each visit, check in or purchase earns a little more, with a bigger reward for completing it. Pair it with an instant win mechanic for the gifting rush. See our guides to streak campaigns and scratch and win campaigns for odds, caps and copy that protect your margin.
9. Gifting referrals
Black Friday is when customers buy for other people, so make it easy to send a friend a reward with the gift. A give and get offer running from BFCM to Christmas turns gift recipients into members. Gameball referrals can attach the reward to the order itself.
10. January reactivation sequence
Plan the January sequence before November. Week one reminds BFCM buyers of their points balance, week two flags the tier deadline, and week three sends a targeted win back offer only to those who still have not returned. Our playbook on reducing customer churn covers how to segment the non returners.
How to sequence BFCM loyalty from October to January
Sequence BFCM loyalty in five phases, starting now: grow the member base before the sale, reward members first, convert the weekend into members, then unlock and reactivate. Publishing your rules in October is the difference between a campaign and a scramble.
For GCC brands, the same calendar applies to White Friday and its regional variants, which often run longer than the US weekend. Saudi Arabia was the largest source of traffic on the Gameball network in November 2025 at 25%. Our guide to customer retention in the GCC covers how Gulf shoppers respond to points versus cashback.
What to set up before Black Friday
Set up enrolment, rules, caps and the January messages before 27 November, because nothing can be added cleanly once traffic peaks. Most of this lives in your promotions and marketing automation setup rather than in new code.
- Guest checkout offers one tap enrolment with welcome points
- Every Black Friday bonus carries a December activation date
- Each reward has a cap and an expiry you can explain in one line
- January reactivation messages are written and scheduled before 27 November
- A holdout group of BFCM buyers gets no loyalty offer, so you can measure lift
How to measure Black Friday loyalty results
Measure Black Friday loyalty by what BFCM buyers do afterwards, not by weekend revenue. The table below lists the metrics worth reporting and when to read them.
| Metric | What it tells you | When to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Second order rate within 60 days | Whether BFCM buyers came back at all | End of January |
| Bonus point redemption rate | Whether the deferred value was attractive enough | Weekly in December |
| Tier confirmation rate | How many fast tracked members kept their tier | After 31 January |
| Lift versus holdout group | What the loyalty offer caused, beyond normal returns | 60 and 90 days |
| Return rate at next Black Friday | Whether you built a customer or a deal hunter | November 2027 |
Watch the redemption number closely: a healthy loyalty redemption rate shows the bonus points are doing their job. Gameball analytics reports these metrics by acquisition cohort, so BFCM buyers can be compared with the rest of your base.
- Black Friday buyers return far less often than other new customers, so the campaign has to be built for December and January, not just the weekend.
- Swap part of the discount for bonus points that unlock after the sale, so the reward itself creates the second visit.
- Use double points windows, tier fast tracks and early access to reward members and pull sign ups in before 27 November.
- Give every BFCM buyer one dated goal: a second order challenge, a December streak or a tier to confirm by 31 January.
- Measure second order rate within 60 days against a holdout group, not total BFCM revenue.

Frequently asked questions
What is a Black Friday loyalty campaign?
A Black Friday loyalty campaign delivers BFCM value through a loyalty program instead of only through discounts. Typical offers are bonus points, double points windows, tier credit, early access for members and rewards that unlock after the sale. The aim is to turn deal buyers into repeat customers by giving them a dated reason to place a second order.
Are bonus points better than a bigger Black Friday discount?
Bonus points are usually better for retention because their value only lands when the customer returns, while a discount is spent on the first order. Many brands combine the two: a competitive headline discount plus bonus points that unlock in December. That keeps the deal attractive and protects margin on buyers who never come back.
When should I launch my Black Friday loyalty campaign?
Launch member acquisition in October and publish the BFCM rules by mid November. Black Friday 2026 falls on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November. Early access and sign up offers need several weeks to build a member base, and January reactivation messages should be written before the sale starts, not after it ends.
How do I get Black Friday buyers to make a second purchase?
Give every Black Friday buyer one clear, dated goal. That can be bonus points that unlock on 15 December, a challenge to order again within 60 days, or a provisional tier they keep by ordering before 31 January. Then follow up with a short January sequence that reminds them of their balance and deadline.
How do I measure if a Black Friday loyalty campaign worked?
Track the second order rate of BFCM buyers within 60 days and compare it with a holdout group that received no loyalty offer. Add bonus point redemption rate and tier confirmation rate. Total weekend revenue is the wrong measure, because it rewards discount depth and says nothing about whether those buyers returned.
Does Black Friday loyalty work for GCC brands?
Yes. The same mechanics apply to White Friday and regional sale periods, which often run longer than the US weekend. Saudi Arabia was the largest traffic source on the Gameball network in November 2025 at 25%. Points, cashback and tier offers can all be localized for Gulf shoppers.
